Day 9: Robben Island and Township... Dark Past and Bright Future

We will close out our journey together with two potentially life changing experiences. First, Travelers will take a ferry to one of South Africa’s most visited sites—Robben Island. Robben Island, whose prison once housed Nelson Mandela, as well as many other freedom fighters, is now a World Heritage Site and provides stunning views across the bay with Table Mountain as its backdrop. A trip to the island is an unforgettable experience, as it offers a view into the times of the apartheid era. It is the symbol of the ultimate triumph of non-racialism over intolerance and oppression.

The group will then enjoy the bitter-sweet experience of today’s South Africa in one of its Townships. Travelers will witness first-hand the continuing residual social and economic impact of the apartheid era, but at the same time will be warmed by the vibrancy, vitality, and hope-filled hearts of the Xhosa people. This tour may be one of the most profound and memorable experiences Travelers will ever have.
